… a quick review of Rihanna and Drake

Of all the positive things people have said about the Drake album, the one that baffles me the most - and the one that’s most often used by people who dislike his persona to make their reviews “balanced” in some delusion of objectivity - is that the sound design is good, that it sounds “gorgeous” or whatever. No. No, it doesn’t. It’s clouds of nothingy synths drifting aimlessly behind too-loud drums (seriously, those sound SO JARRING because he hasn’t bothered to make them as soft as the rest of the music) and his horrible foregrounded voice. Gorgeous sound design is, like, The-Dream or Kate Bush or Booka Shade or prime Timbaland. Drake’s album sounds like ass. Boring ass.

And don’t get me started on how overrated Jamie xx is as a producer…
